The amount of money spent on ads in social games could top $220 million (£140m) this year, according to digital analyst eMarketer.

Although most social games rely heavily on micro and in-game transactions of virtual goods, eMarketer said estimates of ad spend are conservative as companies like Zynga and Playdom increasingly allow brands access to their millions of users.

@jamesparton from O2 gave a short presentation at the Mobile Web Summit about their new developer platform O2 Litmus with some data on how well it is doing so far. Great to see operators sharing more information like this with the community and being open about the performance of new initiatives. Here's the key points I noted down:

What is O2 Litmus?

- O2 Litmus is a successor to previous O2 developer initiatives such as O2 Source and Revolution

- trying to create an environment that encourages experimentation without distracting from the core business

- NOT just an appstore

- engage customers, allow them to participate, offer early adopters a role to help decide what services O2 should roll out to the mainstream

- developers get 5 week payouts not 90 days, 70% revenue share and access to O2 customers in 18 minutes not 18 months

How has it done?

- O2 Litmus has been live for 4 months

- 617 developers have signed up, from 50 countries, with no real PR campaign apart from using social media

- 400 apps live on the site

- 3000 O2 customers registered (now rolling out a campaign to another 600k customers)

- Fring is the top-rated application

- events run with developers e.g. to help define product roadmap etc

What is next?

Online Gambling Bill Passes U.S. House Committee

The HR 2267 bill to regulate online gambling has passed the U.S. House Financial Services Committee on a 41 to 22 vote. Now the bill passed through this stage the full House and the Senate have to approve the bill before it eventually can become law.

Regulating U.S. Online Gambling
Congressman Barney Frank has introduced the HR 2267 bill, known as the Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, back in May 2009.

The bill is an answer to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which forbids financial institutions from transferring funds to and from offshore gambling companies.

The Voting
Last Wednesday the HR 2267 bill was discussed in the U.S. House Financial Services Committee. After a number of amendments were made the House members voted on the bill and it passed with a 41 to 22 vote.

Casinos Allowing U.S. Players
One of the key amendments to the bill is a measure that bans online gambling operators that did allow U.S. players after the enactment of the UIGEA. This would imply that casinos like Rome Casino do not qualify for a gambling license might the law be put into place.
