Tech Focus: What Next for Motion Control?

The recent release of Kinect on PC demonstrates that Microsoft remains firmly committed to its "hands free" controller, and actually features a key hardware upgrade over the Xbox 360 - the ability to work with players at close range: essential for a desktop environment. It's the first step in what is believed to be an evolution for the Kinect platform, which will see its true "sequel" released alongside, or even as part of, the next-generation Xbox. Whether we like it or not - and a great many core gamers clearly don't - motion control is here to stay.

As the Wii gradually winds down and its next-gen successor is readied for launch, it's important to step back and take a look at the diminutive console's achievements. Described by many rather disparagingly as an overclocked GameCube (although essentially that is what it is), Wii remains the most disruptive video game product of the current console generation. While Sony and Microsoft embarked on a hugely expensive technological arms race, Nintendo merely refined its existing, modestly successful hardware with minor architectural changes and a big boost in clock speed. The real genius of its proposition was, of course, the controller.

As joypads became ever more involved and complex, Nintendo pared its own controller back, reducing the principle form of interface to a remote - and everyone knows how to use a remote, right? The add-on nunchuck controller added the requisite analogue controller required to make core games feasible and the rest, as they say, is history. Wii succeeded because it was immediate, original, enjoyable - and everyone could understand it and join in. Pack-in title Wii Sports fails as a comprehensive game with lots of depth, but as a sampler for motion control, it is a work of genius.

"There are thousands of BBC web pages on the mobile site, a whole world
of additional content that you more than likely don't know about. Offering search on mobile is a no-brainer - it gets you to the content
you want with the least possible effort ...."

The new search service covers news, sport, radio & television web pages and iplayer radio and TV content.

Welovemobile helped the BBC to create a
search interface design that incorporates 'best of breed' features from
other types of search engine and discovery interfaces. The aim of the
design is to allow for advanced content search and discovery, with the
emphasis on providing very relevant and personalised "content
surfacing" around the BBC's mobile content and services assets. The
search solution contains some interesting new content filtering and
presentaiton concepts and a slick UI.

The BBC say it was a tough job coming up with the end solution:

"our colleagues in Search
have had many 'interesting' challenges developing BBC search for
mobile. We know it's crucial to get the results right first time on
mobile ... we spent weeks fine tuning the search logic, weighting our search
terms, and we now know more about the idiosyncrasies of search logic
that we ever thought we would need to. Mobile search is still not perfect, but it's been a long time coming
and we wanted to get it launched .... "

The end result looks pretty good, and it's great that The BBC has invested
in developing a bespoke mobile search tool for its site, rather than
relying on a third party white label solution or just bunging in a
google or yahoo site search integration. According to Simon Liss from welovemobile what they have done for the BBC is to

"...think mobile from the
ground up. We’ve applied what we know about mobile devices, mobile usage, user
experience and design to create what we believe is a truly original and
innovative search concept and interface.’

New TV Series Luck Gets Out of the Gates Fast

The new original HBO series Luck starring Dustin Hoffman has gotten off to a good start, with HBO renewing it for a second season after the premier on January 29, 2012 drew largely positive reviews.

Hoffman plays the character Chester "Ace" Bernstein, who is just emerging from a three-year stint in a federal prison. Ace has had a long successful history of being involved in the world of gambling (including ties to organized crime) and he quickly moves on his newest project after getting out of prison, which involves gaining control of a racetrack in order to introduce casino gambling there.

As the story unwinds, however, it becomes clear that Ace has other motivations driving him other than business, including exacting revenge for a series of mistakes that led to his time in prison.

Several other threads wind through the plot of the series, with horseracing serving as a central element that tie them all together. The star-studded cast includes other big names than Hoffman such as Nick Nolte, Dennis Farina, and John Ortiz, as well as an appearance by famous jockey Gary Stevens.

The creator of the series is David Milch, best known for helping to create NYPD Blue and Deadwood. Milch claims that he'd wanted to create the series for many years, with his own love of horseracing stretching back to his childhood:

"The pilot is about a bunch of intersecting lives in the world of horse racing. It's a subject which has engaged and some might say has compelled me for 50 years. I find it as complicated and engaging a special world as any I've ever encountered, not only in what happens in the clubhouse and the grandstand, but also on the backside of the track, where the training is done and where they house the horses."

The new series has largely gotten positive reviews, with Linda Stasi of the New York Post writing: "With an impossibly good cast, writing so spot-on it's poetic, and slow-build stories, I, for one, was left wanting more—even after watching the entire season."
